Dimensional (DIM) weight is the cubic volume of a parcel divided by a carrier-specific divisor (e.g. 4 000 for Australia Post in cm³/kg). Carriers bill the greater of DIM weight or actual weight, so a light but bulky box is charged as if it were heavier.
Australia Post uses cubic-weight conversion of 4 000 — meaning L × W × H (in cm) ÷ 4 000 = cubic weight in kg. A 40 × 30 × 20 cm box has a 6.0 kg cubic weight regardless of the actual parcel mass.
